Halloween night turned out fantastic.  The whole family got dressed up for trick or treating, and my little one was feeling better and ready to go in time.  It was our longest time out trick or treating yet!  Of course, the kids took in a dump truck sized load of candy, EACH!  Now just need to hide it from them and me!

Happy Halloween everyone!  I don’t know about your households, but in this one there have been two kiddos who just can’t wait for today.  And so, the partying ensues.  Yesterday was one school costume parade, and today another.  Then of course trick or treating tonight! Also, true to form, my daughter ends up sick today.  I don’t believe she has been healthy yet for a Halloween.

I have been spending time getting caught up on SO much.  Thought I don’t really want to bore you with all the details.  Just know that running a product-based business isn’t just about producing product, it’s about so much more then that.  Luckily, I do enjoy it all.  I enjoy engaging with a growing community on social media.  You find me most regularly on Instagram and YouTube, though you can also find me on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.  Each one of these platforms has its own “special sauce” if you will for the type of content is shared.  Luckily you can use the same piece of content, you just have to change the delivery up a bit. Though this definitely takes time, the reason it is enjoyable is because I find it a challenge, there is always something to learn.  The process of learning is so fun to me.

This week has been tough, I’m not even going to try to sugar coat it.  Almost every night has been busy with activities for the kiddos.  They were all enjoyable and fun to be a part of, but it can make a hectic day feel a bit more exhausting.  On top of that I have been busting hump in the shop trying to crank out as much product as possible in preparation for the big shop/gallery opening next week.  Again, something amazing that a year ago I wouldn’t have even thought possible.  However, to this perfectionist, it can all feel like pressure.  Pressure to make the perfect products, pressure to try and be the perfect Mom, pressure to keep up my end of household duties, pressure, pressure, pressure.

Whoa, where did that week go!  Lots of great things have happened in the course of a week.  All those great things have been, well, great, but they also equate to a lot of work!  First of all, a week ago tomorrow I was contacted via Instagram by a new store/gallery that has just opened here in downtown Iowa City, called The Makers Loft.  They were very interested in having my stuff join the collection of Iowan makers items for sale in their new space.  So, met with them the following day, found out all the details and decided to jump all in.

Alright, so another pop-up shop under my belt and a great start to the week.  The pop-up was a success for me.  I made twice as much in sales as I did at my first pop-up shop.  Some of the positive differences that really helped with that I believe is that Beadology, where the pop-up shop was at helped to advertise about the pop-up shop prior to the event.  The staff there also directed all customers that came into the store during the weekend to stop by and check out what I had.

So, its been awhile since I got to my “daily” blog.  I apologize for that.  It’s been a busy week, its been a great week!  I was in full side hustle/momprenuer mode.  Finishing up a ton of product for the pop-up shop this weekend.  I was a bit rushed at the end, but not nearly as much as I was for last month’s pop-up.  I had some sanding help from my wife as well, which was extremely helpful of course!  So, here’s everything that got wrapped up this week for the weekend:

In today’s Maker Mom interview, I talk with Tiffany (Tiff) from Staying inside the Grey.  Now Tiffany does not sell what she makes, nor is she currently planning on turning her making into a business, but there is still a great purpose for her making.

1.      Please introduce your self

I’m Tiffany, just turned 40 this year, I’m a Mom. I’ve been in law enforcement for 12 years as a sworn police officer and a little bit longer as a civilian. I basically just use making to balance the chaos of life, I find it extremely therapeutic. Being a Mom and a wife and historically working full-time, that’s sort of my way of coping and releasing and just balancing out that scale.

This weekend was absolutely gorgeous outside.  We are starting to slide into fall and I love it.  Something about waking up to those crisp cool mornings, just makes you want to get outside and play!  Which we did.  We had considerable time outside this weekend playing with the kiddos.  Even took a drive to check out a new park that the kids and us absolutely loved and had a blast at.

Wow!  What a week.  So, week started off good, nice holiday weekend right.  Lots of quality time with the family, a little bit of work time snuck in here and there, all good.  Then BAM, hit by a freight train called the stomach flu! Very early morning on Tuesday I was hit in a very not pleasant way by the stomach bug that had hit our youngest kiddo the week before.  This thing was pure evil.  I was pretty much permanently in a horizontal position for almost 30 hours straight.

Three-day holiday weekends call for lots of family time.  Especially when it’s a rainy weekend.  Put my making skills to use in a different way this weekend by building a blanket fort for the kiddos so they can go “camping” in the living room.  Enjoying lots of snuggle time and the kids playing together.  My youngest is really coming into her own and can hang with her big brother for quite a while during play time.  Its nice to hang back and listen to them giggle and hear the stories they make up, until they start to annoy each other of course! Still, fun times, with minimal refereeing required!  Win!

Wowzer, what a way to end the week and the month!  Absolutely fantastic day.  One of those days that you found me grinning like a goof from ear to ear the whole entire day.  After getting kiddos off to school and daycare it was time for me to head to the shop.  Met a rather creepy new “shop pet”, aka large giant ass spider.  Check out my Instagram Stories here to see that beast!  Anyway, once I had my failed attempt at trying to shoe the creature out of the shop I got to work on carving a bowl for my upcoming pop-up shop on September 15th and 16th at Beadology in downtown Iowa City.  I am super excited about this project.  For starters I haven’t carved a bowl in what seems like forever, and I really enjoy doing them.  Secondly, I am going to be experimenting with a new way to finish these bowls, that in my head seems totally awesome.  I will report back here next week on the actual level of awesomeness! And as if that wasn’t enough super-duper fun in my day, I also had the privilege to interview 3 amazing maker moms.

Yesterday I had the awesome pleasure to do an interview with Kay from Kay at Home about being a Mom, a Maker and an Entrepreneur.  See below for an excerpt of the interview, and then click play on the audio file below for the full thing!

1.      Please introduce your self

My name is Kay Casey and first and foremost a Mom of a wonderful 13-year-old daughter, soon to be 14.  For all of you who have heard that teens can be pretty scary, I’m actually really blessed, because she is a great kid.  Knock on wood, which I have plenty of! She’s a wonderful, wonderful girl.  So first and foremost that is my number one job, being Madison’s Mom. Then following that, I am a maker and artisan and own my own company which is Kay at Home.

Big day, good day today.  Got the kiddos off to their respective schools without a hitch and on-time, so that’s always a good start to the day.  I had the awesome opportunity to interview Kay Casey with Kay at Home from Canada right away in the morning as well.  I have been following Kay’s Instagram account for some time now.  She shares a love of the organic form and addition of color just like I do.  She is also a fellow queer Mom.  All of this along with her personality makes her feel like a fast friend.  So, I was super excited when she agreed to let me interview her for my Maker Mom series.  It was also during the interview that I continued to find a strong conviction to turn my Maker Mom interview series into a podcast.  I feel like, hey, I’m a maker mom and have been searching for podcasts that represent me, so why not just go ahead and make one!  Would love to hear your thoughts on it though.

Nice long weekend of rest and relaxation with the family.  Even made it to the outdoor pool before the season is completely over. Weekends like this are needed in order to just reconnect and refuel the battery.  Of course, I did sneak in a small project.  Creating is something that runs through my veins I feel. If I go too long without it, I get cranky!

Yay!This Mama and her better half made it through our Son’s first two days of Kindergarten and our daughters first week at a new daycare. It would be a massive understatement to say I had been apprehensive about this week, for a at least a solid 3 weeks leading up to it. However, as previously predicted, once we made it first through Monday, my daughter’s first day, and then Thursday, my son’s first day, my nerves drastically calmed down. Both kiddos are loving their new schools and I am loving having them closer to home which means they spend less time away from home.
