Working with your hands is good for the soul. I feed my soul by sculpting wood using an angle grinder and various attachments along with a small rotary tool and an orbital sander to bring it to final smoothness. Utilizing a variety of clothing dyes, I dye the wood a bright, bold and vibrant color. On pieces with unique voids, I use a plant-based epoxy resin to fill the void and provide stability to the piece. I will often color tint the resin or add glow-in-the-dark powder to add an additional point of interest to the completed piece of furniture, home décor, lighting, sculpture, or wall art.
I don’t believe furniture and other home items need only to serve their intended function. I think they can also be a piece of art without affecting the functionality. I use bold colors in my pieces as a way to encourage myself and others to be bold in their truth, and to not only embrace it, but to shout it from the rooftops in unison, “We will not be silenced.”
