Hello, I'm Katie Freeman

The "Why"

Working with your hands is good for the soul. I feed my soul by sculpting wood using an angle grinder and various attachments along with a small rotary tool and an orbital sander to bring it to final smoothness.  Utilizing a variety of clothing dyes, I dye the wood a bright, bold and vibrant color.  On pieces with unique voids, I use a plant-based epoxy resin to fill the void and provide stability to the piece.  I will often color tint the resin or add glow-in-the-dark powder to  add an additional point of interest to the completed piece of furniture, home décor, lighting, sculpture, or wall art.

I don’t believe furniture and other home items need only to serve their intended function.  I think they can also be a piece of art without affecting the functionality.  I use bold colors in my pieces as a way to encourage myself and others to be bold in their truth, and to not only embrace it, but to shout it from the rooftops in unison, “We will not be silenced.”

The deeper mission

I am passionate about making furniture and home décor that pushes the boundaries of design through form and color. Additionally, I am a social media influencer creating and producing content around my projects for platforms such as TikTok and YouTube. My content aims to inspire and entertain. I also host the weekly podcast, Crafting a Revolution, where I share the stories of female and non-binary makers in order to inspire others who currently are or want to get started as a maker, woodworker, or artist.

Starting just this year, I also offer virtual self-paced classes focused on power carving, adding color to woodworking projects, and using fire to create texture and finish. The courses range from beginner to advanced. They are just the next step in supporting my overall mission, to help women and members of marginalized communities empower themselves through the use of power tools and creative expression.

"I strongly believe that all of this information should be available for free to whom ever needs to consume it to strengthen their own journey as an artist, designer, and/or maker."

Giving back

As a means to help support and build my local community, 10% of every sale will be put aside to be part of a larger donation at the end of the year to the Domestic Violence Intervention Program in Iowa City, Iowa.

"I envision helping to create a community of makers that is fully inclusive of all who feel called to make or work with their hands. I aim to especially reach out to fellow Mom’s and members of the LGBTQ community who often face a high stress environment or situation on a regular basis."
